Look to the Books: Our love of Bookstores

“I love walking into a bookstore. It’s like all my friends are sitting on shelves, waving their pages at me.” ― Tahereh Mafi

What is it about a Book Shop that attracts us? Why is it that no matter what town you stroll through you simply must enter through their doors?

Is it that as a booklover these are the shops that have shaped you?

Or perhaps because this is where you can destress. You can enter through those doors, grab a book, find a quiet spot and voila! You’re content.

A book store is filled with so much adventure you can smell the rising rushing seas in a pirate adventure story.

It’s well known that more and more people are purchasing online. Yet we still want the familiarity of spending time in a bookshop. It’s just as Devon Corneal said in her article Why I Love My Local Bookstore. “Books are more than words, they’re experiences, and where you buy them from can sometimes be as memorable and special as the stories themselves.”

Parry Sound is fortunate to have two bookstores.

Parry Sound Books has been in operation since 1988. Since then it has become a fixture in downtown Parry Sound. Charlotte Stein finds one of the most satisfying things about being a bookseller is putting just the right book into the hands of a child. How exciting it must be to have a part in starting young ones off on a lifelong journey of reading!

Keep up with new releases and any sales in the News section of Parry Sound Books website.  Also, if you’re considering a novel you can check Charlotte’s reviews on her site as well. Charlotte also presents readings by authors throughout the year. Check her website! So when you’re visiting our little town stroll through the doors of Parry Sound Books where you will find a wide selection of books, many by Canadian authors.

Bearly Used Books is also located in the heart of downtown Parry Sound. Melissa Thomson has a HUGE selection of used books. You can find anything from your favourite classic Winnie the Pooh, to Jeffery Deavers recent mystery novel. They are bound to have exactly what you’re looking for.

It’s the perfect place to head when you’ve grabbed coffee. After all, what makes a book store even better? Browsing with a coffee in hand! You can wander in, find a comfy chair and take a break.

Amanda Nelson’s article Used Bookstores: A Lifelong Love Affair writes how many feel about shops like Bearly Used Books,  “I used to hide in the stacks of disheveled used book stores to escape from my parents and my peers, letting the weight of all those words create a quiet, dusty fortress. Now I hide in them with my Starbucks and my Very Grown Up book tastes, seeking out that same dusty quiet. Sometimes I want the how-can-I-help-you cleanliness and ordered brightness of a new book store, but more often I find myself using my limited book shopping time to go slink around in the serendipitous chaos of the used book store, letting all that visual stimulation quiet my mind, being left alone by the owners who recognize me for what I am: a grumpy old pro.”

You can find the same escape here. Melissa also welcomes your used books. Bring them in and trade for a new adventure.

Libraries offer the similar wonder of a book store but owning and being able to underline your favourite quotes is something special.

So when in Parry Sound be sure to wander through our book stores. You may just find a real gem that you’ll love and cherish for years to come.
